Hurricane Helene struck Florida's Big Bend coast Thursday night as a formidable Category 4 storm, bringing winds up to 140 mph and life-threatening storm surges.

Over a million customers were left without power as the massive storm caused severe damage hours before landfall. Flooding was reported along the coast, stretching from Fort Myers to Clearwater, with record surge levels seen in the Tampa area, where surges of up to 20 feet were anticipated.

Officials had been issuing warnings for days, urging residents to respect evacuation orders and take the storm seriously. A state of emergency was declared across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

Helene's impact is expected to extend well beyond Florida, with heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flash flooding projected as far north as the Appalachian Mountains.

Southwest Florida is currently experiencing severe flooding as a result of the indirect effects of Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 hurricane moving toward the Big Bend area.

As of 9 p.m., storm surges have caused extensive flooding across the region.
