You know that 4th of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States of America USA, and love of more competition to hot dog eating contest. That Day there were many traditions around the country including fireworks, barbecues with family and friends, and the outdoors. One of my favorite traditions happened; Connie Island Hot Dog Test Contest by Nathan.

You may have heard the boy won his fifth hot dog eater: Joey Chestnut. Chestnut won the crown over dozens of contestants by eating 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes. He failed to break his 6-race record. Lazy.

Some people see this competition and find it disgusting. I watch it and find it interesting, not just for what it is, but for the marketing that surrounds this show and how it started year after year. And how they waste more and more opportunities using the web and social media to apply for a hot dog test.

About ten years ago I read an article about a hot dog contest on the Internet or in a New York newspaper. Now? ESPN is doing a one-hour show with 45 minutes of hype and 10 minutes before the competition. Everything is truly spectacular, the only word to describe it. Huge crowds, really strong emotions, and competitors with nicknames (Joey Chestnut, known as "Joyce") and uniqueness (Eater X does her face). You really don't want to know more about Jaws? For example, how do you lose three times more weight?

What's different from ten years ago? Before that, Nathan had all the hype and all the brands because they had to have a competitive position and food to eat. You now have other sponsors like Heinz (another obvious one), a large network that broadcasts the event, and dozens of other advertisers big and small. The governing body of the event, Major League Eating, also grew as it had a dozen venues where the winners qualified for yesterday's main event.

These are all signs of growth.

However, there is good news and bad news, in my opinion, for the future of hot dog eating competition and in particular, on the 4th of July every year on an island.

The bad news is that Major League Eating doesn't seem to have worked the way it did before, using the web or social media. The good news is that the popularity of competitive eating is growing despite not doing well using the web or social media of Major League Eating.

A quick Facebook review shows Major League Eating only has 4,000 likes. Nathan has around 6,000 likes. Joey Chestnut has less than 4000 likes. The numbers on Twitter are equally disappointing. Most of the websites associated with yesterday's irrationality are also a bit old and have little content and activity. JoeyJawsChestnut.com was last updated in February, with the highlights from last year's competition. Equally light on approved blog content.

The point is, I think the people involved in this incident are missing out on a great opportunity. This is not because eating hot dogs has ever been considered "mainstream" or a sport (in fact, a national survey showed that 81% of people think competitive eating is not a sport). But obviously, the people involved in Major League Eating are more interested than profiting. One of the easiest ways to do this is to spread your brand across social media and the web. For those who can't or haven't seen ESPN broadcasts, there must be more ways to grab attention and get involved cheaply and quickly. If you get a link from someone saying "Watch this crazy man eat 60+ hot dogs in 10 minutes", wouldn't you start looking out of curiosity?

Like I said, I don't think eating hot dogs or competing is common. It has a "disgusting" factor for many people. In fact, my wife was usually expelled. For me, however, it was interesting. I can't be alone. The scary part of all of this is that the people of Major League Eating or Connie Island don't seem to have grasped the power of social media or the web outside of the basics. Get close when they do, and if they do, you'll hear a lot more about it. They have 364 days to promote a hot dog eating contest and have a pretty cool personality to bring together in "Jaws".
